This is the church that arguably started it all. I mean, this early eighteenth century design by James Gibbs (who was most definitely motivated by Sir Christopher Wren), served as the catalyst for a whole new genre of sacred spaces, whether you like them or not. Just think about how many church buildings in America have this look: from low country Anglican, to Reformed, to Baptist, to Puritan, to Non-Denominational. You name it, and they all take their inspiration from this understanding of space. Personally, I'm no fan of classical architecture being used to adorn a Church, the gate of heaven. I'm not alone either, for when Gibbs unveiled his work, he was harshly criticized from both the left and right.
