Butterfield's Seminal Statement: All Saints Margaret Street

If you're looking for the Victorian interpretation of Gothic Revival, look no further. This, William Butterfield's masterpiece, is All Saints Margaret Street. Being steeped in the Oxford Movement, Butterfield also designed Keble College, Oxford. I'm clearly a fan, but during his lifetime, his work was constantly under attack for its use of colored bricks, vibrant mosaics, and Gothic elements.

I just took these exterior shots after attending a low Mass held in the nave. The church may be stunning, but the heater is inoperative! I could see my breath during the confession. Notice the amount of color inside the nave and chancel, which is something American Revival styles tended to neglect. Because the church is built on a city block and not on a corner, the lighting leaves much to be desired. Nevertheless, given the circumstances, Butterfield did a fantastic job.
